Take a breath. Clicking a link is not the same as losing money, and most of the time nothing has happened yet.

Do these now, in order

  1. Do not go back to the page

    Close the tab. Do not tap the link again to check it. If you want to know what the link was, paste the message into the checker instead. It reads the address without opening it.

  2. Did you type anything into that page?

    A password, a card number, a CVV, a PIN, an OTP, an Aadhaar number. If yes, change that password now, from the bank or company’s own app that you already have installed. Never from a link.

  3. Did you share an OTP or approve a request?

    This is the urgent one. Call your bank’s fraud number, which is on the back of your card and on their own app. Ask them to block the card or freeze the account while you check. A bank can act far more usefully in the first hour than on the second day.

  4. Did you install anything?

    Uninstall it. If it was a screen sharing app such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer or QuickSupport, uninstall it, turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data while you do, and then change your banking password from another device. Those apps let someone watch and control your phone.

  5. Check what actually happened to your money

    Open your bank app and look at recent transactions yourself. Do not rely on anyone who calls you to confirm it, including someone claiming to be from the bank.

  6. Report it

What to expect in the next few days

Being caught once often means being contacted again. People who lose money to a scam are frequently approached a second time by someone offering to recover it for a fee. That is the same scam wearing a different coat. No genuine recovery service asks you for money up front.

You may also get calls from someone claiming to be your bank, quoting real details about what just happened. Details being correct is not proof of who is calling. Hang up and dial the number on your card yourself.
